Urbanized
December 04, 2009 - January 15, 2010
Location:   flanders 311 - 311 West Martin Street, Raleigh, NC
Flanders 311 features Urbanized, December 4 – January 15, 2009 - an exhibition exploring the ongoing urbanization of downtown Raleigh features Annemarie Gugelmann, Jay Denmark and Hannah Costner.

Raleigh is a growing city and as such has recently begun to see its downtown skyline change in many ways. Raleigh has a population of some 350,000 people and the growth has spawned the overabundance of high rise condos in the downtown area, demolition and construction have become staples of the everyday landscape.

Annemarie Gugelmann’s work combines her interest in political science with art as she takes an investigative approach to visually examine how cities and communities form and change. Just as a family is bound by the house they live in, a city ties its people together through common spaces. Annemarie is interested in the public domain and how people create an atmosphere and commonality within it. In her work she attempts to capture a city’s unique character and discern how it separates itself from other urban landscapes.

In the past year, Annemarie has created paintings of Zurich, Bern, Munich, San Francisco, Miami, New York City, and Durham. This fall, Annemarie decided to focus on Raleigh and created two new paintings of the downtown area especially for this exhibition. In January 2010, she will begin graduate school at the Rhode Island School of Design in Industrial Design.

With the beginning of "Denmark Studio" in 1917, "Denmark Studio" was one of the premier Photography Studios of its time. Located in downtown Raleigh in the old Hudson Belk Building on Fayetteville St., James Denmark photographed the people, children, landmarks, and special events of Raleigh while his sister Leonita painted and "colorized" the portraits. "Denmark Photography" still enjoys a rich history in the Central Raleigh area today.

As a fine art portraitist and 3rd generation photographer, James's Grandson Jay continues the photography tradition. Jay approaches each subject holistically, incorporating the elements of composition, lighting, and style with emotional impact, which culminates into the overall presentation. Jay also strives to evoke and capture a natural emotional response from the subject being portrayed and brings to life the photography of his grandfather for this exhibition.

Hannah Costner focuses on the development of the place that she call home, and how this need to constantly build reflects our growing inability to be alone. Hannah's current body of work examines the death of our physical history and how this permanent erasure affects who we are, how we feel, and ultimately who we become. Hannah ponders... “What will it mean for us as a society and as individuals as we tear down the historic buildings, develop the land, and forever alter the skyline? “
